Before you delete anything
Keep a separate backup of irreplaceable pictures. If you use iCloud Photos, deletion syncs to other devices signed in to the same Apple Account; it is not just a local cleanup.
Decide what you want to improve: a crowded camera roll, duplicate copies, or a few large videos. These are different jobs. You do not need to compress every photo just because the library feels untidy.
Merge exact duplicates in Apple Photos
Apple keeps a combined item with the highest image quality and relevant data. The redundant copies go to Recently Deleted. If Duplicates is absent, Photos may not have found duplicates or may still be analyzing the library. Detection is not always immediate.
- Open Photos and find Duplicates under Utilities. On versions with a Collections tab, open Collections first.
- Review a duplicate set, then choose Merge and confirm the number of items.
- Check the retained image before moving on to the next set.
Use AI Cleaner for similar shots and gallery review
A sequence of selfies, several angles of the same meal and screenshots taken moments apart may be similar without being exact copies. AI Cleaner groups duplicate and similar images and also offers swipe-based gallery review. It requires iOS 17 or later.
- Open AI Cleaner and review the Photos permission request. The items it can analyze depend on the access you allow.
- Open the duplicate or similar-photo group you want to review. Compare the images at a useful size.
- Keep the version with the expression, detail and crop you prefer. Treat an app recommendation as a suggestion, not a reason to skip your own check.
- Review the selection before confirming deletion. Work through a small batch first.
- Use the screenshot or swipe-review tools for items such as old tickets or temporary reference images that you no longer need.
An example: sort a weekend’s photos
First remove exact copies. Next review each burst of similar pictures and keep the shots that tell a different part of the story. Finally check screenshots separately: a restaurant address may be disposable, while a receipt may still matter. This order keeps memorable photos from being mixed into an indiscriminate delete-all selection.
For large videos, consider whether you need the original quality before using compression. Preview the result and preserve the original when detail matters. Compression can change quality; the amount of space recovered depends on the files and settings.
Why storage may not drop straight away
Deleted photos normally remain recoverable in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Permanently removing them ends that recovery option. Give yourself time to check the cleanup instead of immediately emptying it for a larger storage number.
Photo cleanup also does not clear every kind of iPhone storage. Apps, downloads and system data are separate. AI Cleaner does not have unrestricted access to other apps’ private caches. If photos are only a small part of your storage, deleting more pictures may not solve the main issue.
Common questions
What is the difference between duplicate and similar photos?
Duplicates are repeated copies; similar photos may differ in timing, angle, crop or detail. Review similar images individually before choosing what to keep.
Can I recover a deleted picture?
Apple Photos normally retains deleted items in Recently Deleted for 30 days. Recovery is not available after permanent deletion. Check the album before making more changes.
Can AI Cleaner compress videos?
Yes. It includes photo and video compression. Preview the result and keep an original copy when you need its original quality.
