Check Apple Photos first
Apple says duplicate detection needs iOS 16 or later. Your iPhone must first index the library and identify matches. Detection happens while the phone is locked and connected to power, and can take a few days. The album appears only when duplicates are found.
Check the Duplicates area in Photos after the phone has had time to finish this work. A recently restored or expanded library may need more time. Menu placement can differ between iOS versions.
Similar pictures are not necessarily duplicates
Two photographs can show the same subject and still differ in sharpness, expression, framing or lighting. A burst of a pet moving across a room is a useful example: one frame may be a keeper even when the others look almost identical at first glance.
Separate three tasks: finding exact copies, selecting the best version of similar shots, and reviewing screenshots that are no longer useful. An empty Duplicates area does not answer all three questions.
Use a small review session in AI Cleaner
AI Cleaner provides tools for reviewing duplicate and similar photos, screenshots and swipe-based gallery cleanup. Treat each proposed group as a review task rather than a deletion instruction.
- Open AI Cleaner and review its photo-access request. Only grant the access you are comfortable providing.
- Choose the relevant photo-cleanup tool and inspect a small group first.
- Compare faces, focus and important details. Keep the version that serves your purpose, even if another image looks similar.
- Review your selection before confirming deletion. Pause if you cannot tell which copy is the original you want.
- Check the result in Photos before moving to a larger batch.
Decide what counts as useful
Use a simple rule you can explain: keep the sharpest photograph, retain screenshots with unfinished tasks, or preserve images needed for receipts and records. If a picture has meaning that an automatic comparison cannot see, keep it.
For example, you may want both an edited picture and its original. Similarity alone is not a reason to remove one. The goal is a library you can use, not the highest deletion count.
When to ask for help
If a tool cannot see photos you expect, note which access you allowed and whether the items are visible in Apple Photos. If a result looks wrong, stop before confirming deletion and contact support with the app and iOS versions.
You can describe the issue without sending private pictures. A cropped screenshot of the controls or a test using a non-sensitive image is often a clearer starting point. For Apple’s own Duplicates detection, use the Apple support reference below.
Common questions
Does no Duplicates album mean there are no similar shots?
No. Near-identical photographs may still differ. Review similar images as a separate task.
Should I keep restarting the phone to force detection?
Apple’s guidance is to allow time with the phone locked and connected to power. Repeatedly opening Photos is not a substitute for that processing time.
Can I delete every suggested photo automatically?
Review the selection first. A suggestion cannot know which image has personal or practical value to you.
